First Night-At Last
Written Jan. 20th, 2009
Staring up at the ceiling,
wondering what lies ahead,
four Darkies, holding hands,
lie side by side upon Lincoln’s ancient bed.
Down The Hill,
round the bend,
bathed in moonlight,
the wide Potomac makes its way,
past the Great Granite Steps.
The stern stone face of Abe cracks a smile.
Ancient Hawaiian saying: History has a voice:
If you pay attention you can hear it.
Welcome, Mr. President.
